European Commission waives import duties and VAT on the import of medical equipment

Due to the urgent need of medical equipment and devices in order to deal with the coronavirus, the European Commission has decided to temporarily waive customs duties and VAT on the import of protective equipment, other relevant medical devices or equipment to combat the coronavirus. This ensures a faster and smoother handling of the import of these items from outside the EU and it will help to make those products more accessible. However, there are some conditions to make use of this exemption.

Terms and conditions

Relief will be available to public institutions, aid organisations or philanthropic institutions. In addition, these items have to be distributed free of charge to disaster victims or used by disaster relief agencies.

Under your own name

Entrepreneurs can also donate items to combat the virus to the above mentioned organisations. These organisations can import the goods under their own name and will not have to pay import duties and VAT. Market participants who want to sell these goods will not be exempted.
