Surveillance documents are no longer required for the importation of certain iron, steel and aluminium products

As of 16 May 2020, surveillance documents are no longer required for the importation of certain iron, steel and aluminium products. This means that these goods can be released into the EU free circulation without this surveillance document.

This is the case, because from May 15, 2020, the European Commission uses a different system to continuously monitor these products. Both regulations, which were valid until May 15, 2020, are not renewed. These are the following two regulations:

  • Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/670 of 28 April 2016 introducing prior Union surveillance of imports of certain iron and steel products originating in certain third countries
  • Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/640 of 25 April 2018 introducing prior Union surveillance of imports of certain aluminium products originating in certain third countries

The Commission continues to monitor imports, but in a different way. Statistics are published monthly on the European Commission website.
